Study finds link between autoimmune diseases, non-healing wounds

A review of patients with open wounds treated at a high-volume wound clinic found that 49% had diabetes and 23% had an underlying autoimmune disease. "[T]he connection between these relatively rare disorders and wounds that don't heal is under-recognized," said study leader Victoria Shanmugam, a Georgetown University Hospital rheumatologist. Shanmugan said doctors should test patients with unexplained non-healing wounds for autoimmune diseases.
