Razing the roof at the bottom of the world

To some, it's as much a symbol of the South Pole as the penguins: the triangular-paneled geodesic dome that covered the National Science Foundation's Antarctic buildings for three decades. Now the NSF wants to dismantle the structure, which is no longer used. Some Navy Seabees and other Antarctic veterans want to preserve it for posterity, but to keep up with the NSF's development plans for the site, they will have to raise $500,000 -- and quickly -- to transport the dome to the U.S.
