Forecast: Transition to 450mm wafers is estimated to cost up to $40B

The semiconductor industry's transition to using 450-millimeter silicon wafers may cost up to $40 billion to implement, according to industry observers. Semiconductor Equipment & Materials International estimates the worldwide transition will cost $25 billion to $40 billion, while Imec puts the potential price tag at $25 billion and CEA-LETI forecasts the change from 300mm wafers to 450mm could cost a total of $40 billion.
