Microsoft appears close to Verizon Wireless search deal

Verizon Wireless and Microsoft reportedly are in talks to make Microsoft the default search engine and search-advertising provider for handsets on the Verizon Wireless network. Verizon Wireless could reap as much as $650 million in revenue sharing over five years -- roughly double what Google was prepared to offer the wireless provider before Microsoft joined the bidding. Under a separate deal, Verizon Wireless would install Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system on more of its phones.
