Call center renovation poses challenges in Chicago

Chicago 9-1-1's call center operations floor is undergoing a $31 million renovation, but employees say the changes are inhibiting emergency response. However, officials who acknowledge the challenges posed by the renovation say there have been no serious issues and they are proceeding with great caution to ensure each phase of installation is functional. "We want to make sure it’s absolutely, 100 percent functional before we move to each sequence," said Gary Schenkel, who directs the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications.
