Food safety bill moves to front burner

The Senate is poised to vote on a long-awaited food safety bill this week that would grant more authority to the Health and Human Services and Agriculture departments and charge the agencies with developing a national plan to improve the safety of the nation's food supply. The House passed the bill last year, and a key Senate committee gave its nod earlier this year, before health care and financial regulation reform shoved the issue onto the back burner.
