Researchers transfuse lab-grown blood cells into a human

French researchers have succeeded in transfusing laboratory-grown blood into a human, according to findings published in the journal Blood. The procedure involved taking a patient's hematopoietic bone marrow stem cells, coaxing them in the lab to grow into red blood cells and injecting them back into the patient. The lab-grown cells survived at rates comparable to normal blood cells and effectively transported oxygen around the body, the researchers said.
