Teachers want students to think more about math concepts

The days of traditional math classes in Washoe County, Nev., elementary schools are giving way to a different style of learning that includes small-group discussions and an emphasis on making sure students understand math concepts on a higher level. "It's more of them thinking," said Channon Toles, a teacher at Kate Smith Elementary School in Reno. "Instead of just the teacher going up and doing an algorithm and showing them exactly what to do with that mathematical concept."
