Calif. officials call for safety review of Bay Bridge foundation

The inspections and documents relating to the structural integrity of the foundation of California's new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge should be examined by the state's Seismic Safety Peer Review Panel, according to a state oversight committee. The committee called for the review after a Caltrans technician who worked on the bridge was fired for falsifying inspection data on other projects. "It is essential that outside, independent technical experts undertake a thorough review of all the inspection documents, assess the integrity of the completed work, and make their findings public," said Steve Heminger, executive director of the Bay Area Toll Authority. Two other transportation agencies in the state are also calling for the review.
