Medical inflation dampens workers' comp results, expert says

Workers' compensation "leads all commercial lines with the highest combined ratio" and is seeing decreased results primarily because of medical inflation and low investment yields, Marsh's Tracey Ant said. Insurers are taking actions such as increasing rates and becoming stricter on placements as "profitability is more of a priority than growing their book of business," Ant said. Companies that consider an alternative risk transfer such as a captive program should carefully weigh the taxes and fees associated with such a move, Marsh's Ellyn Casazza said.
