New York Times asks users to fund reporting

The New York Times published a story on garbage in the Pacific Ocean that was funded through Spot.Us, a crowdfunding journalism site. Journalist Lindsey Hoshaw raised almost $10,000 to produce her piece by pitching the idea on Spot.Us and promising readers a human-interest angle. Some journalism critics found the piece wanting, but Leah Betancourt notes that the article covered an underreported issue that might not have received any attention otherwise.
