First plutonium oxide feedstock ready for S.C. MOX facility

The federal government has prepared 974.4 pounds of powdered plutonium oxide for the Shaw AREVA MOX Services fuel fabrication facility currently under construction in South Carolina, according to the National Nuclear Security Administration. The material was processed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and went through a "rigorous certification process," the NNSA said. The government's MOX program seeks to dispose of 37.5 tons of surplus plutonium by converting it into commercial fuel for reactors.
