Chart: Interest on federal debt dwarfs many agency budgets

Paying off the national debt is already costing American taxpayers $220 billion a year -- more than the budgets of the USDA, the Department of Education, the food stamps program or the Department of State, according to Congressional Budget Office data. "That's a lot of money to be spending on something that doesn't do anything for you," notes Marc Goldwein of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.
