U.K. county uses GIS to redesign bus system

County transportation officials in Gloucestershire, England, used GIS technology to redesign their bus system. Using OS Mastermap Integrated Transport Network Layer, Accession from Basemap and OS Streetview, county officials created maps to show where services were lacking and to see how they could make the most of their shrinking budget. "The traditional way of dealing with this would be based on combing through detailed timetables, and the information is very dry and quite abstract. By putting it into maps and doing a bit of colour coding it's easier to see. Straight away you can see the places where people are going to be disadvantaged," said Philip Williams, the county's lead commissioner of community infrastructure.
