FDA approves Abilify for treating children with autism

The FDA approved the drug Abilify for treating aggression and irritability in children ages 6 to 17 who have autism. The approval was based on two studies that showed Abilify, commonly used to treat schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder, improved irritability in patients given the drug compared with those given a placebo. The drug's makers said the medication should be used in combination with psychological, social and educational therapies.
