D.C. school makes a strong pitch to prospective families

Rather than waiting to see which students happen to enroll, Strong John Thomson Elementary School in Washington has aggressively marketed itself through fliers, open houses and Internet discussion boards to families who might otherwise head to charter or private schools. Despite the school's success increasing the size of its student body, unofficial data indicate the city's traditional public schools' enrollment may have declined -- and charter schools' enrollment risen -- this school year.
