Foreign languages can offer study in adventure and romance

The process of learning a foreign language remains a powerful force in education, writes Edutopia contributing editor Owen Edwards in this blog post. Edwards credits his attempts at foreign language learning with helping him better appreciate his native language and suggests that educators encourage students to learn new languages by promoting the adventure and romance that comes with grasping another way of thinking and speaking. "Learn a language, and you learn a people," he writes. "Learn a people, and you learn about yourself."
