Weight-loss surgery cuts heart disease risk in diabetes

Undergoing bariatric surgery may help curb cardiovascular disease risk in obese patients with diabetes, according to a study presented at the World Congress on Interventional Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes. Procedures such as gastric bypass that reroute the gastrointestinal tract appear to affect hormone secretions and improve insulin levels, said Dr. Francesco Rubino.
