Virtual nurse "Elizabeth" gives patients discharge info

Boston researchers have created "Elizabeth," a bedside virtual nurse programmed with patient discharge instructions. Researchers worked with an animator to develop a 3-D model that melds verbal and gesture expressions from videos of nurses and physicians into an animated character on a touch screen computer that can talk about 1,500 medications and quiz patients on their discharge information. Elizabeth is intended to be a helping hand for both staff and their patients, not a replacement for nurses.
