Innovation can be divided into four quadrants, writes Hutch Carpenter, based on how radical or conservative companies are in implementing new technologies and opening new markets. Too many businesses focus only on innovation that seeks to apply new technologies to open new markets -- but in fact, Carpenter asserts, focusing on new applications for existing technology, or applying new innovations to existing markets, can be just as rewarding.
