Quality measures may not cover the sickest hospital patients

Quality of care measures may not show a complete picture of how well hospitals are performing because they don't always reflect the sickest patients or even the majority of them, researchers said. Data on more than 200,000 Medicare heart attack patients showed from one-quarter to more than two-thirds had a condition complex enough to allow them to be excluded from quality measures.
