The recent HHS decision to push back for one year the compliance deadline for the next stage of meaningful use criteria earned praise, but some in the industry view the delay as too late to fully realize its goal to encourage faster EHR adoption. Since the extension was announced Nov. 30, which is the last day for hospitals to attest for Stage 1 MU, "there won't be an opportunity for additional (hospital) people to get in under the wire," Marie Copoulos of the Advisory Board said. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center CIO Dr. John Halamka added that the delay doesn't allow enough free time for vendors to develop and deploy certified EHRs and for providers to start their one-year reporting period to meet the October 2014 attestation deadline.
Delay for Stage 2 MU may be a missed opportunity for some
