Multicenter trial tests brain pacemaker in patients with Alzheimer's

Surgeons at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore have implanted a pacemaker-like device into the brain of a sixth patient with mild Alzheimer's disease as part of a multicenter study to test whether the electrical stimulation device could slow cognitive decline and enhance memory in patients. The investigational therapy was the subject of a completed pilot study, and PET scans showed patients in the pilot had increased neuron function in brain areas linked to learning and memory following a year of stimulation. Researchers are still looking for patients for the multicenter trial.
