Study: Cord blood benefits children with metabolic disorders

The transplantation of umbilical cord blood from unrelated newborns has prolonged life by at least a year in more than 88% of 159 children with inherited metabolic disorders, a U.S. study found. Researchers associated the findings with the immunologically naive and adaptive characteristics of cord blood cells in comparison to bone marrow-derived stem cells.
