How to help high-schoolers who procrastinate on college essays

Parents often think their high-school seniors procrastinate on college admissions essays for one of three reasons: They're not ready to face the reality of leaving home, they're too immersed in senior year nostalgia to plan ahead or they simply can't figure out what to write, college adviser Lee Bierer suggests. "As parents, it's hard to know when and how to nag and when to toss in the towel," Bierer writes. "Is there such a thing as effective nagging? Yes, but parents need to understand what motivates their child and also what may lie behind the procrastination."
