Renewable-material firms, tire makers work on bio-based tires

Biotechnology companies are working to develop sugar-derived bio-based rubbers to replace natural and synthetic sources of rubber. The companies are partnering with tire makers and Lanxess on commercialization. Gevo and Lanxess are developing isobutanol-based butyl rubber.
