The Massachusetts Gaming Commission said Tuesday it will accept initial applications from developers of commercial casinos for the state's southeastern region. The panel does not intend to abandon the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe's casino proposal for Taunton with its latest move. The law permitting gambling in the state gives preference in the region to a federally recognized tribe. Meanwhile, Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell said he is optimistic that the tribe's plan for a casino in Taunton will advance.
