Buying a Christmas tree in an environmentally and ethically sound manner can be more difficult than one might expect. Plastic trees are sprayed with chemicals and will require significant space in landfills, while the market for real Scandinavian firs often exploits workers. According to Lucy Siegle, however, Bols Forstplanteskole -- a Danish company -- wins the "gold star" for its worker-safety regulations and fair trade policies.
