Basic research is the foundation for translational research

The recent focus on translational research has some experts worried that support for basic research will further contract, which would stop translational research in its tracks, writes biochemistry professor Steve Caplan. Translational research is not an alternative to basic research, Caplan writes. "[T]he process of discovering new drugs that inhibit cancerous cells and Alzheimer's disease ... depends upon the ability of basic science to understand essential cellular mechanisms about how cells grow and divide at the molecular and atomic levels -- and of course, this lies outside the definition of translational research," Caplan writes.
