Health care organizations should do more to prevent medical errors related to fatigue due to extended work shifts, according to an alert issued by Joint Commission this week. "Once you pass a certain point, the risk of mistakes increases significantly," said sleep expert Ann Rogers of Emory University. The commission's recommendations include conducting risk evaluations, assessing patient handoffs and supporting staff members who express concerns about fatigue.
