Hospital-acquired infections kill almost 100,000 Americans annually and cost the industry billions of dollars a year, a trend that can be addressed through the use of electronic surveillance tools, writes Dr. Sumant Ramachandra, chief scientific officer at Hospira. The federal government should incorporate HAI-targeting health IT systems into the meaningful use requirements and offer incentives to encourage hospitals to adopt the technology, he notes.
