Feds, stakeholders negotiate timetable for PSTN phaseout

Regulators, academics and representatives of the telecom industry continued to discuss the gradual phaseout of the public switched telephone network as part of a complete transition to IP-based voice during a Federal Communications Commission-sponsored workshop this week. Some participants favor an accelerated transition, with complete phaseout of PSTN by 2015, while others think it will take closer to 10 years to responsibly make the shift.
