California county undertakes 1st 3-way kidney exchange effort

Doctors in San Diego have started the procedures for the county's first three-way kidney exchange effort, in which three patients will receive kidneys from three unrelated donors. This growing trend in transplant medicine, in which patients can receive kidneys from unrelated donors, has been boosted by improved anti-rejection drugs and a nationwide computer database that monitors possible donors.
