Permit deadline looms for Washington state cranes

Just 700 of 10,000 cranes covered by new inspection rules in Washington state have received operating permits, officials say. The rules require cranes of one ton capacity or more to obtain a special state license by Jan. 1. "Crane operators have been busy," a spokesman for the state's Department of Labor & Industries said. "The lag has been with the cranes themselves."
