Some clubs have seized the recession as an opportunity to reinvent themselves with an eye toward long-term prosperity. Lakewood Country Club in Rockville, Md., and Georgia's Brunswick Country Club say their renovations had an instant effect on membership rolls and have helped them attract younger people and families. Clubs are also marketing themselves as year-round alternatives to resorts and high-end leisure travel.
