Former Fla. history teacher uncovers local role in World War II

The investigative skills of former DeLand High School history teacher Dan Friend helped him uncover connections to locally manufactured Beresford Boatworks' tugboats that were part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy and other parts of World War II. "Everyone assumed that the U.S. Army used them in (American) harbors and in the intracoastal waters," he said, adding that to "find out they were involved in the war directly is incredible." Friend will publicly present his findings at a meeting this week.
