EBay sees apps as smartphone auction savior

E-commerce companies have found it difficult to sell products on smartphones because of their smaller screens and keyboards, but eBay has built a pair of iPhone applications aimed at solving those issues. The apps, one of which has been downloaded 5.5 million times, filter EBay's auction items through keywords, aim to simplify the PayPal checkout process and send out daily messages about deals in user-chosen areas. "This is all about utility," said eBay Vice President Steve Yankovich.
