Patients' research can help reduce cosmetic surgery risks

Patients who do a little research before choosing a cosmetic surgeon can enhance their own safety, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says. The plastic or cosmetic surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and the facility where the procedure will be performed should be accredited. Patients who smoke should quit well in advance of surgery, says plastic surgeon Robert Buchanan. Patients should also never assume that procedures such as liposuction will result in permanent weight loss, says plastic surgeon Todd Case.
