Data centers will save power with smart-grid technology

Jack Pouchet, director of energy initiatives at Emerson Network Power, writes that smart-meter technology is migrating from homes to data centers. Big consumers of electrical power for their racks of servers and air conditioning, data centers are expected to make great use of the real-time data and control functions of smart meters, with some facilities able to move to "lights out" operation with minimal staffing.
