Higher daily B-12 intake is needed for diabetes patients on metformin

Patients with type 2 diabetes who are on metformin treatment should increase their daily intake of vitamin B-12, researchers reported in Diabetes Care. Data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey revealed that 5.8% of metformin-treated type 2 diabetes patients had a biochemical B-12 deficiency, compared with 2.4% of those who were not on metformin and 3.3% of those who did not have diabetes.
