New Calif. laws to require vigilance from employers

California will enact more than 20 laws on Jan. 1 that will provide challenges for employers, experts say. One law puts higher penalties in place for companies that misclassify workers as independent contractors. "What this does is increase the stakes by increasing the penalties. This will incentivize plaintiffs lawyers to take these cases," says Stephen Hirschfeld, a lawyer who represents employers.
