A good background pattern is like a watchdog, keeping the rest of your site design on the right track, writes Salman Siddiqui. Patterns can be vivid or plain, quirky or conventional, but they should play a supporting role rather than stealing the show. "Remember, background design patterns are made to watch the website's back. They must add to the visuals of the website and not overpower or distract from the content," he writes.
