SDG&E invests in customer-driven smart-grid solutions

San Diego Gas & Electric has been pursuing its smart-grid initiative with the deployment of 1.4 million smart meters and the introduction next year of a new peak rebate program, but the utility knows it will have little success without active customer engagement. According to SDG&E's Ted Reguly, who directs the smart-meter program, that's why the company has been working on the cutting edge with vendors such as Aclara and Tendril Networks to develop the right tools for communicating with end users and to give customers more control over their energy consumption through home networking.
