Smelter owner will pay $1M in agreement over N.J. soil contamination

An agreement reached with Carteret, N.J., requires the owner of a defunct metals-refining factory to investigate and clean up soil contamination in residential areas. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold also must pay $1 million under the agreement toward the borough's costs in overseeing the remediation.
