Report: U.K. on course to meet EU renewables target

The U.K. is on course to meet its 15% renewable energy commitment to the EU, thanks to a surge in wind and solar installations in the past 18 months, according a recent update of the country's Renewable Energy Roadmap by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Renewable energy accounted for 11.7% of overall generation in the third quarter of 2012, the agency said. Between July 2011 and July 2012, the U.K.'s offshore wind capacity increased 60% to 2.5 gigawatts while land-based wind capacity rose 24% to 5.3 GW, the report found.
