Austin Animal Center ends 2012 with free microchips

The Austin Animal Center is offering free microchip services for pets through 5 p.m. today, in a nod to the fact that loud New Year's celebrations may drive some dogs and cats to run away. "Our officers in the field all carry microchip scanners so they can check animals for tags, and their preference would be to return the animals to home, without ever getting to the shelter," said senior animal protection officer Philip Goen.
