President & CEO
Rick Stamberger is president and CEO of SmartBrief, which he co-founded with Dan O’Brien and Tom Wheeler. He has spent much of his career at the intersection of business, public policy and the not-for-profit sector.
Before his work at SmartBrief, Rick was a founding partner of Quest Partners LLC, a management consultancy based in Boston. He also served as executive vice president and a director of a Washington, D.C.-based technology firm owned by nine cable television companies and NBC. Rick began his career in Washington with the National Cable Television Association.
Rick served as a White House Fellow in 1984-85 in the Office of the Vice President. From 2008 to 2009, he was a member of President-elect Barack Obama’s Transition Project, serving as an agency lead for the Executive Office of the President.
Rick is chairman of the board of directors of the Van Eck Funds. He is also an independent trustee of the Van Eck Market Vectors ETF Trust. He has been an active board member of numerous nonprofit organizations and was executive producer of "John Gardner, Uncommon American," a documentary for public television that aired in 2001. He is a graduate of Williams College and the Harvard Business School.
Chief of Staff
David helps ensure that SmartBrief efficiently and effectively executes its customer plans and strategic plans. He has more than 20 years of executive-leadership experience, building and motivating teams to achieve rapid business growth.
Before working with SmartBrief, David served as chief operating officer and as one of the first employees of Alchemy Systems LP, a software and content firm that focuses on food- and workplace-safety training for production workers. Prior to that, he was president and chief operating officer of Prosoft Learning Corp., a publicly traded technology-training content and certification company. Early in his career, David spent 10 years with United Technologies Otis Elevator in a series of progressively responsible management positions.
David is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and received an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Chief Financial Officer
Dan O’Brien is the chief financial officer and co-founder of SmartBrief. He also is a partner and co-founder of Quest Partners LLC, a management consultancy based in Boston. Since 1988, he has assisted executives in service industries to develop differentiation strategies, assess the performance of key corporate processes, and design and lead organization-wide change efforts.
Dan also serves on the central committee of LabelsAreForJars.org, a nonprofit service initiative focused on feeding the hungry in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Harvard College and the Harvard Business School.
Chief Technology Officer
Vineet Mahajan is responsible for all aspects of SmartBrief's technology, including strategy, engineering, infrastructure and enterprise services. A seasoned technology leader, Vineet has nearly 15 years of experience in diverse online businesses and financial services. Prior to joining SmartBrief, he was vice president of technology at AOL, where he oversaw engineering and product development of media products.
Vineet holds a master's degree in computer science from University of Georgia and a bachelor’s degree with honors in computer science and engineering from Punjab Engineering College, India.
VP of Products
Joe oversees the development and management of SmartBrief's products. He also manages the various corporate initiatives that SmartBrief implements to achieve its annual goals.
Before joining SmartBrief, Joe's career included equal doses of strategy consulting and entrepreneurial ventures. He ran the consulting operations for two firms, Gen3 Partners and Harbor Research. His focus was to help companies achieve rapid growth by leveraging technology and developing effective innovation processes.
Joe also has run two venture-funded startups as CEO, including TeleManager Technologies, a communication-software and services company focused on pharmacy-automation market, and MediaBrains, where he developed and executed the strategy and operating plan for an 80-person software company providing online-directory and catalog solutions for Web publishers and advertisers.
Joe is a graduate of Georgetown University and received his master's in business administration from the Harvard Business School.
VP of Advertising Operations
Joan leads the Advertising Operations Client Services team that is charged with providing an incomparable advertising experience across multiple products for SmartBrief advertising clients and association partners. Through diligent ad trafficking, QA checks and constant communication with clients both internal and external to SmartBrief, the Ad Ops team provides unwavering service to make the SmartBrief advertising experience exceptional.
Joan started with SmartBrief in 2005, and over the course of her tenure has held several positions in the Ad Ops group with increasing responsibility. Prior to joining SmartBrief, Joan held inventory-management positions in the direct-response and telecommunications industries.
Joan holds a B.S. in business logistics from Pennsylvania State University and an M.B.A. from George Mason University.
VP of Sales
Patrick is in charge of the vertical sales team that is responsible for all endemic ad sales at SmartBrief. Before SmartBrief, Patrick served as senior director of interactive for Creative Loafing, where he spearheaded new strategies, products and training. In 2005, Patrick worked for buySAFE, in Arlington, Va., where he managed the top 50 clients representing $200 million in annual sales. Patrick began his career with IWCO Direct in Minnesota, selling direct-marketing services to Fortune 500 clients, then transferred to Washington, D.C., where he spent five years working in business development.
VP of Strategic Accounts
Matt oversees SmartBrief's Strategic Accounts Group based in New York City, responsible for the development and maintenance of key enterprise and agency accounts. He continues to be both a player and a coach, and enjoys spending time with our clients, learning about their needs and applying tactics to best meet those needs. Prior to founding the Strategic Accounts Group and opening our first offices in NYC in 2008, Matt launched sales efforts for several of SmartBrief's key verticals, including aerospace and aviation, biotechnology, health insurance and telecommunications. Since joining SmartBrief in 2002, Matt has been involved with several key enhancements to our offerings, including our first Demand Gen platform, or ability to serve advertisements across our portfolio, and, most recently, our content-marketing suite.
Matt got his start in interactive media on the buying side, working primarily on the Network Solutions account. At the time, they were the largest digital spender in the B2B space.
VP of Human Resources & Administration
Bryan is responsible for driving SmartBrief's human resource strategies and programs, with the ultimate goal to recruit and develop SmartBrief's world-class, diverse workforce. In addition, Bryan is responsible for SmartBrief's administrative functions, including procurement, real estate, accounting, facilities and business-contingency planning.
Bryan began his career with Andersen Consulting and has held senior management positions with Discovery Channel and Fast Company magazine, where he was a member of the launch team.
Bryan holds an M.B.A. and a B.S. in marketing from the University of Colorado.
Janis Becker, Director of Talent Management and Acquisition
Janis is charged with overseeing the Talent Development function at SmartBrief and is responsible for recruiting top talent and supporting their personal and professional career growth and development. Before joining SmartBrief, Janis ran her own consulting business, BGM consulting, where she delivered customized leadership consulting and programs. Prior to establishing her consulting business, Janis spent 8 years at Lehman Brothers as a vice president in their Talent Management organization.
Megan Conniff, Director of Content
Megan is the managing director of the Content Department. She began working at SmartBrief as an editorial intern in 2005, and since then has written, edited and managed content for the company's e-mail newsletters and blogs across many industries, including retail, CPG, foodservice, hospitality and health care. Previously she worked as an editorial assistant at the American Chemical Society. She has a B.A. in English and German from James Madison University and an M.A. in English from George Mason University.
Joe Riddle, Education Group Publisher
Joe launched SmartBrief's education business more than 10 years ago, and he now manages the combined education and workforce group. He claims to have the best job in education because he gets to interact daily with the brightest minds in the field, including teachers, trainers, vendors and policy experts. Dena Malouf, Retail, Marketing & Advertising Group Publisher
Dena is the Publisher for the Retail, Advertising and Marketing group for SmartBrief. A native of Maryland, Dena returned to the DC area after college and started her career at CEB, formerly Corporate Executive Board, in the Sales and Marketing Division. She then moved to SmartBrief where, over the last five years, she has grown and developed one of the most successful portfolios of business at SmartBrief.
Chris Warne, Food & Hospitality Group Publisher
Chris is the Publisher for the Food & Hospitality group for SmartBrief, responsible for advertising and business development for the foodservice, grocery, CPG, food processing and hospitality markets. Prior to joining SmartBrief in 2010, Chris served as Group Publisher at Penton Media and Director of Research at Lebhar-Friedman. Chris is a New York City native and works in the SmartBrief offices in NYC.
Joe Webster, Director of Marketing
Joe leads leads a team responsible for audience development, subscriber growth, social media, business development, content syndication and distribution in support of SmartBrief’s 200+ publications spanning over 15 industries.
Previously, Joe was in charge of business development at Storyful, the world’s first social media news agency. Prior to that, he spent more than seven years at The Associated Press, where he led the U.S. digital marketing team and created much of the social media footprint in use by the news cooperative today. Dishan De Silva, Corporate Controller
Dishan is the corporate controller of SmartBrief. He serves as the company’s principal accounting officer and is responsible for corporate accounting, internal controls and financial reporting. Dishan also manages SmartBrief’s accounting and CRM platforms.
Dishan has worked in corporate accounting and consulting for over 13 years; his last engagement was as a senior consultant for TMW Systems, an industry leader in transportation & logistics management software.
Dishan holds a bachelor’s degree from Bluffton University, a Master of Accountancy from Cleveland State University and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
