SmartPulse — our weekly nonscientific reader poll in SmartBrief on Leadership — tracks feedback from more than 210,000 business leaders. We run the poll question each week in our e-newsletter.

How prepared are you for the end-of-year review process?

  • Completely — all I have to do is deliver the reviews: 14%
  • Mostly — need to put some more thought into the final review: 43%
  • Not very — it’s going to take me a lot of time to get ready: 11%
  • Not at all — I haven’t even started thinking about reviews: 11%
  • Not applicable — we don’t do reviews or we’ve already finished them: 20%

Your people deserve your effort. While year-end reviews can be a chore, don’t your people deserve your best efforts in assessing their performance and helping them grow? If people are our most important resource, we as leaders need to demonstrate that with the thought we put into their year-end reviews. One way to reduce the time you have to spend on reviews is to have your team members write their own. That helps you get a sense for how they did, gives them practice writing reviews, and highlights points where your assessment might be different from theirs. Regardless of how you tackle reviews, get on top of them and give them the effort they deserve.
