Students can lose as much as 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical computation skills , writes Leah Shafer in her article Summer Math Loss. Online-learning platforms are a good way to give students math experiences during their summer break.

Fog Stone Isle, by Cignition, is a virtual world where students can practice realistic applications of fraction operations. Teachers in Evergreen School District use Fog Stone Isle during the school year, in their classrooms and also as part of student homework. The platform is designed to let students work at their own pace, building their virtual worlds, while teachers track progress from the teacher workstation, according to Cignition’s site. Teachers can see what students understand and where they need additional assistance.

The platform is available at no cost to schools. Parents can purchase the program for $9.99 (for the summer) and assistance is available for families who demonstrate financial need. Students can participate in a contest to earn chances to win a Nintendo Switch console.
