Leadership

SmartPulse — our weekly nonscientific reader poll in SmartBrief on Leadership — tracks feedback from more than 190,000 business leaders. We run the poll question each week in our e-newsletter.

Last week, we asked: How well have you defined your personal leadership agenda and legacy?

  • Very well — I know exactly what I’m trying to build: 46.79%
  • OK — I sort of know what I want my agenda/legacy to be: 36.43%
  • Not well — I haven’t really thought about it at all: 16.79%

What’s your legacy? Leaving a leadership legacy is clearly important to many of you. The more deliberate you are in defining your leadership legacy, the more likely you are to leave one you’re proud of. Legacies are a function of how much impact you have, times the breadth of that impact, times the duration of that impact, times how many people can build on top of it. It’s a cumulative process. Start defining your legacy now so you can be satisfied with it once you’ve built it.
